Do you know that Haiti is the 2nd country in New World that became independent? In the beginning of modern era due to the process of colonization, Haiti was separated into two territories. Eastern part was property of Spain when another part belonged to French state.

After colonization of these territories by European powers new government transported on Haiti half of million black slaves. They were occupied on plantations and didn't liked it very much. After Revolution in France ended, it echoed back in New World. Soon the first riot began, evolving future ruler of the independent Haiti Jean-Jacques Dessalines. This guy took his owner's name, which was normal that time in the Caribbean. Meanwhile Spain made an attempt to gain French part of Haiti, but was repulsed . After Spanish fail rebels wanted to have a rest, but Napoleon, something not too far being Emperor of France, send his troops across the ocean. After series of struggle the French gave up, and Dessalines became the consul of Haiti. Then Dessalines proclaimed himself Emperor.

Unfortunately after success of revolution former slaves decided to punish their former owners and started a slaughter. They killed almost all white people on the island leaving only a few graduated guys.
